Puppets in Caminha this weekend
The town of Caminha hosts this weekend, 1 and 2 December, the Maluga – Luso-Galaic Puppet Festival. There are street shows, workshops and even the only banana circus on the planet. For children and adults alike.
A play about a giant turnip, a clown lost in an animated journey, banana circus and fun workshops. This is the wonderful world of Portuguese and Galician puppets that this weekend flows into Caminha.
The town of Alto Minho is the stage for the Festa Luso-Galaica da Marioneta, an event designed for kids and grown-ups. There are street and theatre shows and workshops where the youngest can build their own puppets.
The mornings of the event will be filled with “fun workshops”, which will take place from 10am in the Paços do Concelho building. On the 1st, ‘The Fantastic World of Leftovers’ – construction of shadow puppets – will be held by Krisálida, and on the 2nd, ‘Yarn & Paper’ – construction of yarn puppets – by Trécola Puppet Theatre. These workshops are aimed at children over 4 years old.
The afternoon of December 1 is very busy. Between 2pm and 5pm, at Conselheiro Silva Torres Square, “Circo Máximo” will take place, the “only banana circus on the planet”. This is a street performance by the Marimbondo Company, from Lousã, in which all the actors are, precisely, bananas. At 5.30 p.m., the show “The Giant Turnip” will be performed by the company Partículas Elementares, from Ovar. It is an original text by Alexis Tolstoy and everything takes place in a small and beautiful backyard, where the main characters are an old couple and, of course, a giant turnip. This show takes place at Valadares, Caminha Municipal Theatre.
Like Saturday afternoon, Sunday afternoon will also be full of animation. At 3 p.m., the street show ‘HEAVEN’ by Daniel Gonçalves will take place in the Terreiro. This is a show where a clown wanders through life, carrying suitcases, carrying memories, carrying very funny situations!
MALUGA closes with the play TOLITATES, presented by the Teatro Marionetas Trécola, from Lugo (Galicia), at Valadares Teatro Municipal de Caminha. It is a show without text, which presents a new manipulation technique, mixing object theatre, string puppets, bunraku and puppets. The puppets and the objects become the protagonists of the story, replacing during 50 minutes the words for action and music in a magical place, full of secrets and where the figure of the puppeteer is hidden.
MALUGA is organized by Krisálida – Associação Cultural do Alto Minho in partnership with Câmara Municipal de Caminha. During December 1st and 2nd there will be a bus running back and forth between Viana do Castelo and Caminha.
