Land of whalers
When the harpoon penetrated the flesh, “that joy lasted … it was a worship because there were thousands and thousands of mouths waiting for that whale.” It was like this until the 1980’s. Whaling is now a camera job, but the cetaceans have already been the main breadwinner of the people of the island.
In Lajes do Pico the memory of the saga of the whalers lasts in the houses of the boats whalers now musealized and in lasts also at the houses of each one. Here they tell the history of the people, their struggle at sea and their struggle on land.
